What Is Douyin? (The Chinese TikTok Explained)

Douyin is TikTok's original Chinese version — same company, separate platform. Here's what makes it different and how to access it.

If you’ve ever heard “Douyin” and wondered how it relates to TikTok, you’re not alone. Douyin is TikTok — but not exactly. Here’s the full picture.

Douyin and TikTok Are the Same App, Split in Two

Both Douyin (抖音) and TikTok are made by the same company: ByteDance, a Chinese tech company founded in 2012. When ByteDance launched its short-video product in China in 2016, they called it Douyin. When they expanded internationally in 2017–2018, they rebranded it as TikTok for markets outside China.

The two apps share the same core technology and algorithm — but they’re kept completely separate:

You cannot access Douyin content through TikTok, and vice versa. They have separate accounts, separate feeds, and separate servers.

Why Douyin Content Is Different

Douyin’s content is shaped by its user base — predominantly mainland Chinese creators. You’ll find:

  • High-production beauty and fashion content
  • Street food and restaurant tours
  • Educational and “edutainment” clips
  • Trending Chinese music and audio
  • A significant amount of e-commerce content (Douyin has built-in live shopping)

Douyin also historically allowed higher-resolution video and had more e-commerce features before TikTok rolled out similar features globally.

Can People Outside China Use Douyin?

Technically yes, but with friction:

  • Douyin requires a Chinese phone number for full account access
  • The app is only available on Chinese app stores (not the international App Store or Google Play)
  • Content is almost entirely in Chinese
  • Some features require a Chinese ID for verification

Most non-Chinese users who access Douyin do so to discover content from Chinese creators, particularly in niches like food, fashion, and trending sounds that appear on Douyin before making it to TikTok.

Downloading Douyin Videos

Since Douyin videos are hosted on separate Chinese CDN servers, they require different handling than TikTok. Most standard TikTok downloaders don’t support Douyin.

SnapTik supports both. To download a Douyin video:

  1. Open the Douyin app or website and find the video
  2. Copy the share link (tap Share → Copy link)
  3. Go to aicareers.io and paste the link
  4. Click Fetch — SnapTik will detect the Douyin URL automatically
  5. Download the video (or audio) as normal

Summary

  • Douyin = TikTok’s Chinese version, made by ByteDance
  • Same company, completely separate platforms
  • Content is mostly Chinese-language and aimed at mainland Chinese users
  • SnapTik supports Douyin video downloads alongside TikTok
